Harvard University (HUPD) Interim Police Chief Denis Dowing, announced effective Monday February 22, 2021, Sgt. Jacobo Negron will be assigned as the HUPD’s Community Engagement and Inclusion Chair.
The Community Engagement and Inclusion Chair plays a key role in building and maintaining active relationships between the Harvard University Police Department and the diverse population of students, staff, faculty, and visitors that comprise the Harvard Community. Similarly, the role delivers awareness and communication facilitation, acts as a resource for individuals and groups, and provides the community with available programs and resources. The Chair is responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of the department’s externally facing diversity, inclusion and belonging initiatives and programs designed to meet the changing needs of the community.
The Community Engagement and Inclusion Chair will lead a committee comprised of volunteers from HUPD members who are engaged and looking for opportunities to make a difference by fostering a safe and inclusive environment around us, create and enhance partnerships and participate in various outreach initiatives in support to the goals of the committee.
Sgt. Negron has worked at Harvard University Police Department for the past 17 years in several different capacities (patrol, detail office, detective) and presently sergeant for patrol operations on the day shift. He is also the Administrative Chair for the Association of Harvard Latinx Faculty, and Staff (voted in June of 2019 by fellow Harvard Colleagues, two year term) and is an active member of the Employee Resource Group Council. Sgt. Negron graduated with a B.A., Magna Cum Laude, in Criminal Justice, Sociology and a minor in Management from Curry College. Sgt. Negron is also a member of the Hispanic American Police Command Officers Association(HAPCOA), Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators and Association of Latino Professionals For America.
Chief Dowing reports that Sgt. Negron brings the necessary passion and credentials to this assignment and he is eager to see him drive this effort forward with the support of fellow members of HUPD. HAPCOA joins the HUPD in congratulating Sgt. Negron and wishing him success!
